Equestrian drawing is a natural skill which has been strengthened and informed by my close experience of horses, has resulted in instant success over the past few years. I was invited to exhibit at the prestigious Glasgow Art Club, and asked by Ilex Press, London, to write and illustrate a book which is now distributed world-wide and translated into different languages. I have also won an award for Best Drawing with the Society of Equestrian Artists, and I had a solo exhibition in Edinburgh in 2016. The Jockey Club purchased the rights to one of my drawings for use in a new development at Sandown Park racecourse.
This success has enabled and encouraged me to make a deeper study of anatomy and of observational drawing and painting. I like to draw with simplicity and immediacy, but I have an enquiring mind and like to know what lies under the surface of a subject. Anatomy is fascinating in its own right and I have had the privilege of learning directly from Sarah Simblet and Eleanor Crook at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford as well as from Gillian Higgins at “Horses inside Out”.
I like to work on paper with charcoal and paint, but want to explore an abstract approach to equestrian art which combines the energy of my line drawings with a fuller statement in colour or other media. The human body is an inspiration, and I regularly work with masters in life drawing and painting.
I enjoy painting with dye on cloth and I created and ran a successful business for many years, making hand-painted silks and cottons into clothing and accessories, sold throughout the UK. In the search to develop my designs and skills further, I returned to Glasgow School of Art and graduated from the Painting School in 2001. I am now more focused on drawing, painting and printmaking within a contemporary art context.
