Diana Hand has created a series of large and medium scale equestrian drawings for this exhibition, using different media to explore new ideas and to develop her work beyond either a conventional representation or a rapid sketch. She referred to the writings of Gottfried Bammes to learn more about the anatomical structure of the horse and, with that structure, to experiment freely with media such as charcoal and watercolour washes. She discovered a surreal and dream-like world of imaginary horses from the past. This relates to the strong unconscious appeal that the horse continues to have for humans.
